The Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quintet

Denver-based Capri Records has shipped our brand new CD this week! For those of you in San Diego, there will be a pre-release concert on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011. The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library Jazz Series will present the first CD release event that night featuring all five artists on the recording. “The series concludes on Saturday, November 26, with a special CD release event by the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quintet featuring Terell Stafford on trumpet, Rob Thorsen on bass, and Richard Sellers on drums. Recognized by DownBeat as “one of the outstanding pianists of our time,” Mike Wofford’s first performances date to the 1960s with the legendary Lighthouse All-Stars and the bands of Shelly Manne, Teddy Edwards, Chet Baker, Bud Shank and Shorty Rogers. From the 70s to the 90s, Wofford toured with artists such as Lee Konitz, Benny Carter, and Zoot Sims, and as pianist and music director for both Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. His wife and co-leader in this quintet, Holly Hofmann, is one of the Athenaeum’s favorite performers. JazzTimes commented, “[Hofmann] possesses one of the most exquisite flute tones in jazz.” They are joined by one of today’s leading jazz trumpeters, the extraordinary Terell Stafford. Of this new project, Mike Wofford writes, “Holly’s and my first co-led quintet CD, Turn Signal, will be released by Capri Records in January 2012, but we will be performing the music and signing CDs for our Athenaeum audience a month in advance. The feel and approach of this recording is dedicated to some of the greats of jazz I’ve long admired, among them Horace Silver, Richard Twardzik and Oliver Nelson.”

Mike and I are heading to Charlotte, NC, in August for the National Flute Assoc. Convention.  A yearly event for flutists of all ages, 2011 will feature many jazz flute events.  Convention jazz rhythm section, pianist Mike Wofford, bassist Ron Brendle and drummer Rick Dior will play with flutists, Jamie Baum, Nelson Rangell, Jane Lenoir, Zachary Kellogg and the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band conducted by Ali Ryerson.

On Saturday evening, Aug. 13,  Mike and I will perform with our rhythm section and members of the Charlotte Symphony string section as part of a Gala Concert at the Belk Theater.  Our performance will include Mike’s commissioned composition, “Tapestry 39,” and Jobim’s  “Agua de Beber” arranged by Christopher Hughes.

Favorites, new faces and Oregon’s finest headline the 2011 Jazz at Newport Festival! This year, some of the finest musicians in the world will be performing blues, Latin jazz, bebop and classics from the Great American Songbook. No matter what kind of jazz you like, you’ll find it at Jazz at Newport 2011, from exquisite guitar and clarinet duos, to Caribbean jazz trios and traditional sax/trumpet quintets. Please join me in welcoming this nationally renowned group of jazz musicians to the city of Newport this year! The festival runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 along the Oregon coast.

March and April: We'll be working locally in San Diego and off the road preparing for two new record projects in May and June.  In May we'll be recording a new Mike Wofford Quintet project for Capri Records with trumpet great Terell Stafford and moi in the front line. In June I'll make my first all alto flute recording for Cleveland's Azica Records. Whoo-hoo, do I have practicing to do!? Stand by for updates and photos from the recording studio.
